Kinematic Suite 5

  • Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center 138 West 300 South Salt Lake City, UT, 84101 United States (map)

Sound alchemist VCR5 and film artist Justin Chouinard join forces for the first time ever to perform KINEMATIC SUITE 5 - a suite of magnetic audio and manipulated visuals.  Real film footage and old school video cassettes get tweaked, bent, and melded together to create a pumpin’ yet contemplative phantasmagoria for the eyes and ears.   Their energetic live performance is partly composed, fractionally improvised, completely sensory exploitative and absolutely not recurrent (one night only!).  Aged, analogue technology re-purposed and revitalized through performance, an exhibited live conversation of sound and light.

Joe Greathouse performs under the moniker VCR5.  His obsession with VCR decks (the ones that play VHS video cassette tapes) inspired his signature technique for mixing multiple audio tracks from these movie videotapes into a live cyberpunk electronic music performance that is chaotic, rhythmic, and energizing.  The sounds of VCR5 emerge like a combination oflayered video game sound tracks with a dance club vibe.  Greathouse’s illustration and graphic design work that accompany his music releases is inspired by German design house Hort, Peruvian fantasy artist Boris Vallejo, and comic book artist Mark Brooks.  The unique form of VCR5 captures the succinct beauty of patterns and clarity amid random disorder like windshield wipers coming into sync for abrief moment before falling apart.

Justin Chouinard is a media artist working with camera-less film, animation, video, sound-art, and performance.  His pieces explore themes such as the mechanics of perception, the reflexive qualities of film, and cinema’s dual nature as time + light experience and object experience. Chouinard’s current work is concentrated in a series of private and public film/projector performances exploring artist and apparatus relationships.  He is currently the Specialty Media Coordinator and Facilities Manager in the Film & Media Arts Department at the University of Utah and Vice Board President for the non-profit media production organization Reel Advocacy. Originally from Cody Wyoming, Chouinard received his BA in Film Studies from the University of Utah and later his MFA from The State University of New York at Buffalo.

DTC is proud to present KINEMATIC SUITE 5 - a new collaborative performance by these two awesome Salt Lake City artists.  Two shows, one night only!
